Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga for Children

Ashtanga Vinyasa

These classes are based on the Ashtanga Vinyasa Primary Series and are suitable for fit beginners or those with more yoga experience who want to experience this dynamic, flowing and energetic style of yoga. The Primary Series consists of opening and closing mantras, sun salutations, standing, various seated and supine postures and a finishing sequence of asanas (postures). Ashtanga is the system of yoga taught by the late Shri K. Pattabhi Jois  (1915-2009) in Mysore, India. His son Manju Jois, daughter Saraswathi and grandchildren Sharath and Sharmila will now carry on the Ashtanga tradition. This is a beautiful practice which has many levels with each student discovering which level suits their body.

The Monday 6pm is a full led primary series in one hour and thirty minutes. This class is for those already familiar with the sequence or have an existing yoga experience. Part of the tradition is maintaining the natural rhythm and pace of the practice.

The benefits of a regular Ashtanga practice include:

  •  Improved circulation.
  •  Increased oxygenation of the blood.
  •  Greater strength and stamina.
  •  Improved posture.
  •  Better sleep.
  •  Improved flexibility.
  • Reduces stress.

Note: Don't worry if you aren't particularly flexible this will come in time with patience, what is more important is that you practice with awareness; awareness of what your body is capable of and awareness of your breath.  This awareness truly connects the body and mind. This is yoga.

Testimonials

"Alison is a natural, inspirational teacher, with a great deal of knowledge, dedication and passion to her yoga practice. It has been a joy to learn from her, so much so that I have gone on to complete my Yoga Teacher Training with Paul Dallaghan in Thailand."

 Gyl – Yoga Teacher

"I have attended Alison's Ashtanga yoga classes in Dundee for over a year now, and make a definite effort not to miss a single session. This reflects not only the considerable direct benefits of the physical practice, but also her support for her students on their larger yogic journey. I was looking to advance my yoga practice, and from the very first lesson with Alison, I could tell I had found the right place.

Alison is a highly committed and competent teacher. She is also very humble, emphasising she too is on the same journey, continually attending workshops to increase her own knowledge which she then brings to the class.

The group is small and friendly and there is an atmosphere of encouragement, support and fun. Alison's wit is remarkably well developed - humour is vital when facing the more challenging aspects of the practice!"

Yoga in Schools

Providing general Hatha yoga classes to Primary school children. Yoga is not just an activity children go to once a week for an hour, it adds value to their lives off the mat. Yoga supports the emotional and physical development of a child as they grow into adulthood. Yoga is a great way for young children to really connect with their bodies, mind and soul. There is so much emphasis these days on children "doing stuff" with little or no concern in teaching children the skill of managing their energy. Without this skill how can we expect our children to be able to concentrate in class when they have no body/mind skills. Yoga fits beautifully into the Curriculum of Excellence "Health and Wellbeing". Yoga can improve motor skills, confidence, self-esteem, breathing, coordination, posture and self discipline, to name but a few of the benefits. As they go through primary school and start to learn about the world, where they fit in and the relationships they have with others, yoga can support this time of change and ease the transition into the preteen years. Yoga allows the true nature of a child to shine through.

The benefits of yoga for children;

* Boosts self-confidence and self-esteem.

* Develops strength, flexibility and balance.

* Improves breathing patterns.

* Improves concentration and gives a sense of well-being.

* Encourages children to accept themselves and others as unique individuals.
